After 38 years of marriage, my husband and I divorced — at his funeral, a stranger told me: “YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR HUSBAND DID FOR YOU!”
My husband, Richard, and I had known each other since college. We started dating during our freshman year.
We were both 20 years old when we got married.
We were happy. Two children, five grandchildren. Richard was always caring, cheerful, and kind.
Until he changed completely.
I don’t know what happened to my husband, but he became distant and withdrawn.
He often seemed sad and serious. Sometimes he wouldn’t sleep in our bedroom and would instead sleep in the living room, locking the door behind him.
Whenever I asked him what was wrong, he would just shut down and say it was stress at work.
This went on for six months.
Then one evening, he came home from work, sat down at the kitchen table, and didn’t even look at me.
He said nervously:
“I cheated on you with another woman. I’m sorry. I can’t lie to you anymore.”
After those words, I forgot how to breathe.
When I tried to ask him who this woman was and how long it had been going on, he brushed me off.
Thirty-eight years of marriage. I had devoted my life to him. Our family was my entire world. Had I really been that blind?
I couldn’t live with that lie.
Soon after, we divorced.
Five years passed. We didn’t speak anymore — only our children stayed in occasional contact with him.
I tried to move on, even though it was still very hard.
A few days ago, the hospital called me and informed me that he had suddenly died of a heart attack.
Yesterday was the funeral.
The whole family and his friends were there.
I recognized everyone — EXCEPT for one woman sitting in the last row, someone I had never seen before.
She looked calm, but very serious.
After the service, when most people had already left, I approached her and asked how she knew Richard.
The woman grew visibly nervous. It was clear she didn’t want to answer, but I pressed her.
Then she sharply pulled me aside and whispered:
“YOU DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE TRUTH, DO YOU? YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR HUSBAND DID FOR YOU — OR WHAT REALLY HAPPENED FIVE YEARS AGO.” ⬇️
