Does God Exist? Chris Langan’s Answer and What Science Cannot Prove

Belief in God continues to be widespread in most of the world, despite the development of science and the growing number of people who do not identify with any religion. A study published by the Pew Research Center in 2025 found that, on average, 83% of respondents across 35 countries believe in God.

However, the question of whether God exists remains one of the most debated topics in philosophy, science, and theology. For Chris Langan, the American whom the media has for years labeled as one of the most intelligent people in the world, the answer is clear: yes.

Langan is known for his reportedly extremely high scores on IQ tests and for his model called the “Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe” (CTMU). This model attempts to explain reality as a system that not only exists but also organizes and processes itself.

For years, the media has presented Langan as one of the people with the highest IQ in the world, with reported scores between 190 and 210. However, these figures are not supported by any single official or verifiable record. Even the comparison with Albert Einstein is largely media-driven, as there is no evidence that the famous physicist ever took a standardized intelligence test. For this reason, it cannot be determined with certainty whether Langan had a higher IQ than Einstein.

“Reality has an identity”

In an interview published on October 20, 2024, on CTMU Radio, American journalist and commentator Michael Knowles asked Langan directly whether God exists.

“Yes. Reality has an identity. Identity is that through which something exists. In fact, when you use the word ‘reality,’ you are naming an identity. You are identifying something,” Langan replied.

According to him, once reality is defined as a single whole, its properties can be examined. Langan claims that these properties match those that major religions attribute to God.

“Once you have built the preliminary framework, you begin to derive the properties of this identity and discover that they match the properties of God, as described in most of the world’s major religions,” he said.

In his model, God is linked to the source and organization of all reality. Langan attributes to God omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence, but also adds consciousness. According to him, God is not merely an abstract principle or a physical law, but a conscious being with whom humans can have a personal relationship.

Does he believe in the God of Christianity?

Langan’s view approaches some elements of Christian belief but is not limited to it. During the interview, Michael Knowles connects his explanation to Moses, the Trinity, and Christian teachings, while Langan agrees with the idea of a conscious and personal God.

However, he builds his concept on the CTMU model and presents God as the source, identity, and organizing principle of all reality. In this sense, his view is broader than the traditional doctrine of any single religion and includes similarities with Judaism, Islam, and other philosophical and religious traditions.

On the other hand, Langan does not limit his explanation only to the Abrahamic religions. He also mentions Hinduism, Taoism, and certain interpretations of Buddhism, arguing that different traditions attempt to describe the same fundamental principle of reality.

His view is closer to panentheism than to pantheism. Pantheism equates God with the universe, whereas panentheism holds that the universe exists within God, but that God is greater and not limited by the physical world.

According to the CTMU model, God is the source that creates, organizes, and keeps all of reality coherent. Langan describes Him as a conscious, omniscient, and personal being, within which individual human consciousnesses also exist.

This view aligns with his Christian belief, according to which God is not merely an undefined force or energy, but a being with consciousness and will, with whom humans can have a personal relationship. Langan attempts to explain this belief also through his philosophical and theoretical model of reality.

Does this constitute scientific proof?

Langan presents the CTMU as a philosophical and metaphysical model through which he tries to explain the connection between reality, mind, and consciousness. In his materials, he uses concepts from logic and mathematics to argue that the fundamental properties of reality match those that religions attribute to God.

However, the CTMU is not considered a scientific theory confirmed through experiments, nor is it widely accepted by the scientific community as proof of God’s existence. It remains largely a philosophical framework constructed by Langan to explain the nature of reality and consciousness.

The National Academies of Sciences in the United States clarifies that science generally cannot prove or disprove claims about supernatural beings and realities, because they cannot be tested through standard scientific methods.

Even among scientists, there is no unified stance on belief in God. In a Pew Research Center survey conducted in 2009 among members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 33% said they believed in God, 18% in a universal spirit or higher power, while 41% said they believed in neither.

How does he describe life after death?

Langan has also spoken about what, according to him, happens after death. On the “Theories of Everything” podcast hosted by Curt Jaimungal, he stated that physical death does not extinguish consciousness but ends its connection to the current body.

“When you withdraw from this reality, you return toward the origin of reality. You may be given a replacement body, a different kind of body that enables you to continue existing,” Langan said.

According to his explanation, after death consciousness departs from the physical reality we know and passes into another form of existence. He compares this state to meditation, during which the individual continues to exist and observe changes.

Langan also spoke about the possibility of reincarnation, stating that different lives may unfold simultaneously in a reality not subject to the linear way humans experience time. These claims arise from his philosophical model of reality and consciousness.

Along the same lines, he links the existence of God to the structure and functioning of reality itself. For Langan, God is a conscious and personal being, while the continuity of consciousness after death is part of the same effort to explain the connection between humans, the universe, and the source of existence.

Where do scientific proofs and religious beliefs part ways?

Langan’s claims about God, consciousness, and life after death are part of his philosophical model of reality. They have not been confirmed through experiments and do not represent a stance accepted by the scientific community. The use of concepts from mathematics and logic can make an argument more structured, but it does not automatically turn it into a scientific conclusion.

Science relies on claims that can be observed, measured, tested, and, if evidence shows otherwise, falsified. For issues such as the development of life on Earth, for example, the theory of evolution is supported by a large body of evidence from genetics, paleontology, comparative anatomy, and direct observations of changes in organisms.

For this reason, religious interpretations claiming that all species were created instantly in their present-day form do not align with scientific knowledge. However, many believers do not read religious texts as literal scientific descriptions and accept evolution as a natural process, without necessarily seeing it as a denial of belief in God.
